Stripmall Ballads & Tanner Bingaman

Double Bill! Stripmall Ballads & Tanner Bingaman

Tanner Bingaman is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist (guitar/banjo/harmonica), poet, and producer from rural Pennsylvania who spends his time foraging writhing folk art from the hills of Appalachia. He prefers barefoot walking and once saved the family dog from a rattlesnake. Tanner's debut record, “Everything & Nothing” by Tanner Bingaman's Pretty Big Garden is now streaming everywhere and available on limited edition vinyl, CD, and cassette. The album explores sonic territory from raw field recordings to polished pop gems, pulling from a wealth of influences spanning indie-folk to ambient to Indian classical, featuring a wild range of tonalities and instrumentation. Think Pinegrove meets Tyler Childers with a touch of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones; the sound of writhing folk forged from Appalachian mud.

Phillips Saylor Wisor - aka STRIPMALL BALLADS - is a Maryland-based rollicking musical rambler, rife with story-songs rich in emotion and hardihood.    His brand of folk music sings the heartbreaking ballads of old brick buildings, vacant lots, and rustbelt towns. Of third shift papas, flood plains, and long drives through nowhere towns. He’s boots on the ground, guitar across the body, ever observing the ugly mundane mixed with the beautiful chaos of this place we trample upon on the daily.

Bushmaster featuring Gary Brown

Bushmaster featuring Gary Brown

The Blues comes to the Loft!

Gary Brown loves playing guitar, and loves playing/performing for people - the more the better.  Events are a great way for him to share his love of guitar and music with a wide spectrum of music lovers.  It's easy to see, from watching him perform, how connected he is to the music - he emotes - making sure each note counts, conveying not only the melody of each song, but the emotion behind them.

Bushmaster featuring Gary Brown, a funky-cool-blues-rock-original music power trio based in the DC/MD/PA area have put out five self-produced albums containing some socially conscious lyrics.  Gary writes all the lyrics and most of the music, and is in the process of creating new tunes - thus utilizing his downtime due to the pandemic, to write, while he waited till it was safe to perform live again.

Growing up in the Maryland suburbs of DC, Gary absorbed/explored as much music as possible, and picked up the guitar at the age of 12, teaching himself, and learning and playing with other players as much as possible.  He used to carry his guitar with him everywhere, even to work, and play on the breaks and while waiting for public transportation.  He formed Bushmaster in 1993 with a friend, after stints in other local acts, and has performed under the moniker ever since.

Among their many performances, Bushmaster is thrilled to have participated at several festivals including Tinner Hill Blues Fest, H Street Festival, Silver Spring Blues Festival, DelMarVa Bike Week, and Central PA Festival of the Arts, just to name a few.

Gary’s music tackles social topics from his own perspective and includes topics such as police profiling, inner city violence, environmental issues, current political strife, and veganism amongst other more traditional blues topics.

Minor Gold w/ opening act Trae Sheenan

A DOUBLE BILL!

Opening Act - Trae Sheenan

An old soul from the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, Trae Sheehan has been writing songs and performing since the age of ten. A lover of imagery and storytelling through lyrics based on old stories and poems, he never shies away from the hard stuff, instead setting it out in the open to be heard and discussed. Pulling inspiration from the country/rock sound of The Eagles, the folk roots of Bob Dylan, and the swift melodies of John Denver, his songs are written from a place of honesty with an understanding of people and culture gained through his travels and performances.

Feature Act - Minor Gold

Australia based duo Minor Gold echo 70’s cosmic Americana with an easy charm and potent honesty. The strength of the songwriting and the indeterminate perfection of how these two artists' voices lock in together hit right where the emotions live inside us.  From intense campfire intimacy through to open throttle abandon, Minor Gold enthral as they weave masterful harmonies and deft guitar around unforgettable, stripped back performances.

QUOTES

“Brilliant songwriting and impeccable performances make this such an endearing debut” – Double J

“… sunbathed slice of '70s Americana pop” - Josh Lesson / New Castle Herald & Canberra Times

“Like Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham at the top of their game” - Loud Mouth

“A potent partnership; their voices meld beautifully, with heavenly harmonies and a glorious

simplicity to the presentation…this is an album to get lost in.” – STACK Magazine

With his unique style and powerful storytelling, Grant has captivated audiences across the country and earned recognition as a leading voice in the contemporary folk scene.

A self-described “tree-hugger that watches NASCAR,” Grant Peeples is known for his axe-sharp socio-political tunes, raucous humor and heart-gigging ballads.

Fantastic Cat

MOVED TO THE LOFT TONIGHT!

The Levitt AMP Cumberland Music Series is pleased to welcome New York-based band, Fantastic Cat!

They said it couldn’t be done. Four different songwriters joining forces to form a single band? There was simply no precedent (outside of CSNY, The Beatles, The Traveling Wilburys, The Highwaymen, Monsters of Folk, etc). And yet Fantastic Cat did it anyway, defying the odds and teaming up to record their highly unanticipated debut, The Very Best Of Fantastic Cat. Captured in the wilds of the Pocono Mountains, the album gleefully careens between genres and decades, mixing electrified 60’s folk and 70’s AM radio gold as it balances careful craftsmanship and ecstatic abandon in equal measure.

Individually, each member of Fantastic Cat boasts their own impressive resume along with a litany of critical acclaim. The Guardian dubbed Don DiLego “one to watch.” NPR said Anthony D’Amato “sings and writes in the tradition of Bruce Springsteen or Josh Ritter.” Rolling Stone called Brian Dunne’s latest single a “stunner” and praised Mike Montali’s band, Hollis Brown, as “the soundtrack for a late-night drive through the American heartland.” Collectively, though, the four transcend their respective roots, emerging as an instrument-swapping, harmony-trading, tear-jerking, wise-cracking rock and roll cooperative far greater than the sum of its parts. They say some cats are born fantastic; others have fantasy thrust upon them. These guys are somewhere in the middle. Free Admission - first come first serve

Forever Plaid

Forever Plaid

Theater at the Loft!

On February 9, 1964, a semi-professional harmony group from eastern Pennsylvania met an unfortunate end in an accident on the way to their first big gig. The Plaids -- Jinx, Sparky, Francis, and Smudge -- now find themselves in limbo with only one way to cross over: perform the concert they never got to do in life. Will their voices be heavenly enough to get them through the Pearly Gates? In this wholesome musical suitable for all ages, the Plaids will serenade you with classics from the Great American Songbook like "Three Coins in the Fountain," "Sixteen Tons," "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing," and more. But they'll also make you laugh by dancing with plungers, recounting how they received Perry Como's Golden Cardigan from the man himself, and re-enacting the entire history of the Ed Sullivan Show in three minutes!

Forever Plaid is presented by Acting Out for Good, a western Maryland theatre group that raises funds for area causes and individuals in need, with over $70,000 donated since 2014. Proceeds from the box office and additional audience contributions will be donated to Brenda Briggs, an area resident battling ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) in her long-term nursing care costs. Show dates and times are Thursday through Saturday, June 27-29, at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $15 for ages 13 and up, $10 under age 13.
