The Blues comes to the Loft!
Gary Brown loves playing guitar, and loves playing/performing for people - the more the better. Events are a great way for him to share his love of guitar and music with a wide spectrum of music lovers. It's easy to see, from watching him perform, how connected he is to the music - he emotes - making sure each note counts, conveying not only the melody of each song, but the emotion behind them.
Bushmaster featuring Gary Brown, a funky-cool-blues-rock-original music power trio based in the DC/MD/PA area have put out five self-produced albums containing some socially conscious lyrics. Gary writes all the lyrics and most of the music, and is in the process of creating new tunes - thus utilizing his downtime due to the pandemic, to write, while he waited till it was safe to perform live again.
Growing up in the Maryland suburbs of DC, Gary absorbed/explored as much music as possible, and picked up the guitar at the age of 12, teaching himself, and learning and playing with other players as much as possible. He used to carry his guitar with him everywhere, even to work, and play on the breaks and while waiting for public transportation. He formed Bushmaster in 1993 with a friend, after stints in other local acts, and has performed under the moniker ever since.
Among their many performances, Bushmaster is thrilled to have participated at several festivals including Tinner Hill Blues Fest, H Street Festival, Silver Spring Blues Festival, DelMarVa Bike Week, and Central PA Festival of the Arts, just to name a few.
Gary’s music tackles social topics from his own perspective and includes topics such as police profiling, inner city violence, environmental issues, current political strife, and veganism amongst other more traditional blues topics.

Here is a sample of what the critics have to say about Gary and his music:
"...Brown is massively funky, and uncorks truckloads of energy..."
- Michael Molenda, Guitar Player Magazine
"...His guitar playing rivals the great blues and rock stars that helped establish what it means to be a true rock star..."
- Richie Frieman, PensEyeVie
"...expression of emotion that the true masters of their instrument can bring..."
- Blues Bunny, Blues Bunny Magazine
"... Brown rips off some smokin' syncopated licks in his typically muscular tone...The best part of Brown's ability is how he plays the silences. He lets the song breathe..."
- Domenick Moore, Shinbone
"...Instrumental interaction is a constant highlight on Live & Blue, as Brown and his bandmates mix it up and play off one another to create some dazzling musical magic..."
- PA Musician Magazine
"...This is a totally mind-blowing album and if Bushmaster had been around in 1972 I'm sure George Clinton would've been recruiting them for Funkadelic..."
- Andy Grigg, Real Blues Magazine, Victoria, BC, Canada
"...Some bands embrace a retro sound as homage or to prove a certain kind of affiliation. Others are trying to capture a time or feeling that resonates with their psyche. Gary Brown's Bushmaster seems so steeped in 1969-1975, it's like they're time travelers. They perfectly evoke a blend of Jimi Hendrix and Paul Rodgers-era Bad Company filtered through a solid electric blues band...."
- Jason Goldman, Jester Jay Music
